Lexical Blending and the Morpho-Phonological Interface: Towards an Integrated System for Non-Concatenative Morphology

The present study examines lexical blending, a word formation process that consists of the combination or overlapping of two bases, in such a way that the resulting unit brings together an initial segment from the first base and a final segment from the second base (almuerzo + cena> almuercena; tarado + estúpido> tarúpido). We will determine the descriptively appropriate structure for these words, and we will also specify how lexical blending is carried out within a constructionist framework, such as that of Distributed Morphology. Our initial hypothesis posits that blending occurs as a result of a specific structural configuration, the presence of evaluative features, and a series of readjustment processes at the morpho-phonological interface, which specifically involve the elimination of a part of the phonological structure based on stress patterns. We do not consider blending to be a strictly morphological (in contrast to Nóbrega, 2023) nor a strictly phonological (in contrast to Bauer 1983) process, but rather one that involves the articulation of both aspects at the morpho-phonological interface.

Los The Contributions of Clemente Hernando Balmori and Demetrio Gazdaru to the Constitution of the Subfield of Philology and Linguistics in Argentina (1939-1973)

Between the beginning and the end of the Second World War, two European academics set sail from the other side of the Atlantic to Argentina for opposite (political) reasons. Both joined two important universities by the Río de la Plata. The Romanian Demetrio Gazdaru and the Spaniard Clemente Hernando Balmori worked at the National University of La Plata and the University of Buenos Aires, and from these institutions they brought into circulation knowledge and theories that contributed to the creation of a subfield with its own logic. In order to study the participation of both these scholars in this process, we will rely on documents related to their teaching work, letters, scientific publications and other personal and institutional documents dated between 1939, the year Balmori arrived in Argentina, and 1973, when Gazdaru left. Based on a methodology linked to the INTERCO-SSH project led by Gisèle Sapiro and to the work of Analía Gerbaudo (2021; 2022) on the field of literary studies in Argentina, it is expected that this study will contribute to the knowledge of the processes of institutionalization and professionalization of Philology and Linguistics, and will shed light on the influence of two important academics who have been insufficiently studied. Their influence will be assessed in terms of their decisive participation in the creation or direction of specialized institutes and journals, their presence in new academic chairs, their training of human resources, and their participation in various academic circles.

La The Second Letter of Relation by Hernán Cortés in Literary Studies: A Reflection on the Archive

Assigning literary value to colonial texts such as the Second Letter of the conquistador Hernán Cortés remains a challenge in the academic field today. In this paper, I first offer a theoretical-critical overview, outlining the framework that allows such documents to be read from a perspective that departs from classical historicism and is, instead, aligned with that of colonial literary studies, which has experienced a revival since the late twentieth century. At the same time, I explore how the Cortesian archive, marked by the tension between scarcity and abundance, begins to define its literary character early on, thanks mainly to the printed versions of the Second Letter, namely the editions of 1522 (Seville, ed. Jacobo Cromberger) and 1524 (Nuremberg, ed. Fridericum Peypus), which ensure, on the one hand, the transformation of the relation into a narrative and, on the other, the wide circulation and literary prominence of the image of the city of Tenochtitlan.

Subordination and Vassalage in La tierra fértil (1999) by Paloma Díaz-Mas

From a neomedieval perspective, this article analyzes the historical novel La tierra fértil (1999), by the Spanish author Paloma Díaz-Mas, with the aim of addressing the issues of war, subordination and lineage in the context of feudalism (and the possibility of a current neo-feudalism). The return of Arnau de Bonastre to his fief unfolds in the text a complex plot of family relationships and social hierarchies of the time, through the link, both with Bertrán Guerau, his contrasting peer, and with his offspring, the various lords to whom he answers, and the peasants, maids and soldiers subordinated to him. We will be interested, above all, in the effects of violence, marginalization and social injustice. We will begin with an exposition of the theories that argue that we are currently living in (or are very close to) a feudal society, mainly due to the decentralization and shift of power. In this sense, it will be important to understand the characteristics of medieval feudalism, especially in relation to the various links between people. This will lead to observe in what situation certain minorities such as women, Muslims and Jews are left in these contexts and how this is captured in the novel. Finally, the fief-vassal nexus between lord and vassal will allow us to illustrate dependence in its various aspects.

Altos y bajos fondos porteños and “El crimen de la mosca azul”. Science, Pseudoscience and Occultism in Late Stories of Early Detective Fiction in Argentina

Between the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century, the scientific culture of the period intersected with ideas coming from pseudosciences and spiritisms –then at the height of their popularity– to shape an imaginary. This imaginary was mainly expressed through the so-called scientific fantasy (Gasparini, 2012; Quereilhac, 2016) and permeated some of the productions of the early detective fiction, especially Eduardo Holmberg´s stories, which were built on the hybridization between both genres. This paper examines a number of early twentieth-century stories that show both continuities with and departures from this tradition. Specifically, we will focus on some of the stories included in the saga Altos y bajos fondos porteños (1911-1912), by Pablo Daronel, and on “El crimen de la mosca azul”, by Enrique R. Lavalle. These fictions rework topics and motifs of scientific fantasy and, while expanding themes and promoting different narrative formulas for the genre, they distance themselves from their nineteenth-century predecessors by including parodic elements and breaches on plausibility.

Variation and Polysemy of the Syntagm tan luego

The adverb luego and the syntagm tan luego (‘soon after + noun’, ‘so soon’, ‘as soon as’) are polysemous expressions: the former, depending on the presence of the immediacy feature; the latter, on whether it is compositionally formed or lexicalized. After a brief introduction dedicated to the meanings of luego in the Spanish-speaking world, the study focuses on two constructions whose meanings are formed compositionally: an adverbial syntagm and a temporal subordinate. On the other hand, the homonymous adverbial focal locution tan luego is characterized by having lost its temporal meaning, acquiring that of focalizer, close to that provided by the adverbs precisamente (‘precisely’) or justamente (‘justly’). Since the meaning of this expression is not compositionally derived like that of the other homophonous units, its formation will be explained by reanalyzing its constituents. This phrase has not received the attention of grammarians or other linguists, so this work aims to contribute to the knowledge of a Río de la Plata locution that, although little used currently in conversation, continues to appear in written, literary or journalistic language.

La The Vida de Barlán e Josafá: The Cultural Model of Sancho IV (Some Remarks in Light of David Arbesú’s Recent Edition)

In this research note, I examine David Arbesú’s recent edition of Vida de Barlán e Josafá (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, 2023) and the role this work played in the court of Sancho IV. After discussing the merits of the edition, I argue that the text is part of Sancho IV’s broader cultural and spiritual renewal program, aimed at reevaluating the scientific knowledge promoted during the reign of his father, Alfonso X. I highlight passages where the Vida criticizes disciplines such as astrology and rhetoric, portraying them as dangerous and deceptive, while exalting the revealed truth of Christian preaching and monastic asceticism. I conclude by suggesting that the father-son dynamic between King Avenir and Infante Josafá mirrors the complex relationship between Alfonso X and Sancho IV, as well as the latter’s efforts to infuse the Castilian monarchy with a stronger religious dimension.
