Abstract

In 2015, the criteria for the consultation of the Dirección Federal de Seguridad Archive were revised, which protects the General Archive of the Nation of Mexico and since then a debate has been opened on the legislation related to historical archives and the protection of personal data. The article explains the origin of the DFS fund, its importance for historical research –especially that referring to the crimes committed by the Mexican State during the twentieth century–, and the negative consequences of the application of data protection regulations of Personal information for research in this historical collection. It concludes with a reflection on the relationship that censorship has to the consultation of DFS fund with the debate around the new General Law of Archives presented to the Congress of the Union in 2016.
