Abstract  The article intends an analysis of the topic of the martyrdom just as it is manifested in IV Macc. Their source, II Macc. narrates the tortures suffered by the old Eleazar and a mother with their seven children to refuse to eat pig meat. The author of IV Macc. it reprocesses and it amplifies the story with a different intention: it is not only an exemplum of which is been worth to demonstrate the truth of their hypothesis "the compassionate reasoning it can dominate the passions" but rather it locates the martyrs inside the biblical tradition as new worthy models of imitation for future generations.
