Estudios Sociales del NOA, Nueva Serie (ESNOA NS) is an annual publication of the Instituto Interdisciplinario Tilcara, Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires (ISSN 0329-8256, Impresa; ISSN 2362-2482, En línea). ESNOA NS accepts various types of submissions including ones that are theory-focused, methodological or case studies, as well as book reviews. All submissions should not have been previously published. The submissions should present contributions to the discipline in which they are based, to the social sciences, and to the field of Andean studies in particular.

AIM AND SCOPE

Authors are responsible for content and for the correct use of references and citations. To be considered for evaluation, submissions should comply with the norms outlined below. The Editorial Committee reserves the right to reject a submission before sending it for external evaluation if they decide it does not address the general aims of the journal, if it does not respect the editorial norms, or does not meet the journal’s standards of academic quality.

Submissions are submitted for external evaluation by two professionals with experience in the themes addressed by the author(s) and who possess an academic formation superior to or equal to that of the author(s).  Each external evaluator may suggest one of the following options: (1) accept with no modifications; (2) accept with minor modifications; (3) accept with substantial modifications; (4) reject. If both evaluators coincide in their rejection of an article, it will not be considered for publication. An article will be considered for publication if it is accepted by both evaluators (options 1 or 2). Should strong differences exist between the two evaluations, a third external evaluation will be sought. Authors should make corrections, in the text, in accordance with the observations of evaluators. Likewise, they should also attach a note directed to the Editorial Committee in which they summarize the changes and corrections made, and justify any suggested modifications that were not made. If, in the judgment of the Editorial Committee these modifications do not sufficiently respond to the observations of the external evaluators, the work may be rejected for publication. The Editorial Committee reserves final judgment for publication.

The magazine is made up of the following sections:

  • Free articles: contributions from one or more authors.
  • Thematic dossiers: bring together articles grouped by theme, problem or space. They are coordinated by renowned specialists invited by the Editorial Committee. The coordinators call the authors who will make it up and write the presentation of it.
  • Academic biographies of researchers: includes interviews with leaders of social disciplines who have marked paths, who have dedicated their lives to investigating, reflecting and communicating relevant aspects about the Andean region and, in some cases, its relationship with lowland societies.
  • Reviews of books about the Andean world and the Argentine Northwest.

Submissions should be sent electronically, in a Windows-compatible format. Inquiries and submissions should be sent to: estudiossocialesdelnoa@yahoo.com.ar.

PEER REVIEW PROCESS

ESNOA NS receives previously unpublished submissions. Submitted work should not have been simultaneously presented for publication in other journals. Manuscripts should fulfill the aims and objectives of the journal. The Editorial Committee reserves the right to reject a submission before external evaluation if it is considered to fulfill the general aims of the journal, does not respect the editorial norms, or doesn’t meet standards of academic quality.

Contributions will be evaluated by two external evaluators, who are selected by the Editorial Committee for their expertise in the proposed themes and who possess academic antecedents and formation superior or equivalent to the author (s).

Manuscripts will first be revised by two members of the Editorial Committee to ensure that they fulfill the editorial norms and objectives of the journal. Should a discrepancy arise in the assessment of a submission, a third member of the editorial committee will be asked to review the text. For submissions that meet the editorial norms, the Editorial Committee will propose external evaluators with expertise in the proposed themes, both from Argentine research centers and international ones. Peer review is double blind, and external reviewers may suggest changes and corrections. The external reviewers for each issue will be chosen specifically to address the themes and disciplines of submissions, and based on their expertise.

Each reviewer can suggest the following assessments: (1) accept without modifications; (2) accept with minor modifications; (3) accept with substantial modifications; (4) reject. Should both reviewers agree that a submission should be rejected, it will be returned to the author. Articles will be considered for publication if both evaluators accept the submission (options 1, 2, or 3). Should one evaluator accept a submission, while another rejects it, the work will be sent to a third reviewer. If that reviewer advises rejection, the work will be rejected for publication.

Authors should correct the manuscript in response to the comments and observations of reviewers and return the corrected text within one month. Authors should include a note directed to the Editorial Committee indicating the changes made to the text and justifying those that were not. Should the Editorial Committee decide that the corrections do not respond to the external reviews or deem the justification insufficient, the work may be rejected on the judgment of the committee.

STATEMENT ON THE RESPONSIBILITY OF AUTHORS FOR THEIR ARTICLES

Authors are entirely responsible for the content of their articles and for the correct usage of works cited in their texts. In order for articles to be sent for external evaluation, they should comply with the academic norms we outline here. The Editorial Committee reserves the right to reject a work without submitting it for external evaluation if they think it does not fall within the scope and aims of the journal, fails to comply with editorial norms, or does not meet the journal's standards of academic merit.

Authors are responsible for acquiring the necessary permissions for tables, images and citations from other works used in their article, be they from published or unpublished sources. The origins of all images, figures and data should be correctly indicated in the text. If this authorization has not been obtained, these elements cannot be incorporated in articles. Likewise, elements from already published texts must be correctly referenced.

For articles with multiple authors, the author submitting the manuscript to the journal should have the signatures of co-authors confirming the originality of the work, guaranteeing that necessary permissions for the use of materials and data have been acquired, and confirming the order in which co-authors should be listed.

CODE OF CONDUCT AND GOOD PRACTICES

NOA Social Studies New Series adheres to the Code of Conduct and Good Practices established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors and Code of Conduct for Journals Publishers). This code expresses the ethical commitment of those who participate in the process of preparing Social Studies of the NOA New Series: authors, peer evaluators and the institution itself represented by the editor and the editorial committee.

ORIGINALITY AND PLAGIARISM

Submitting a piece of writing for publication means that it is completely unpublished. Textual citations of writings that belong to the same author or to other authors must be accompanied by their respective bibliographical citation. A copied text that appears in the writing as the author's own will be considered plagiarism, which represents intellectual dishonesty that will motivate the rejection of the writing.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PEER/REVIEWERS

The reviewers' concepts must be objective, fair, and formulated in a respectful and constructive tone. The reviewers' concepts must be free of personal opinions or value judgments. If the reviewer does not consider himself sufficiently qualified to review an article, he must express this after reading the abstract of the article, before the complete article is sent to him.

Reviewers must be free of any conflict of interest in relation to the authors, the work or their funders, which could influence their decision towards the acceptance or rejection of a particular manuscript or if they have an insurmountable impediment. In all these cases they must express this before the Editorial Committee sends them the full text of the manuscript.

It is the responsibility of the reviewers to point out to the authors relevant references that have not been included in the manuscript. It is also the responsibility of the reviewer to alert the Editorial Committee about a possible double publication that has not been reported by the Journal.

The handling of works submitted for evaluation must be confidential, and must not be shared with anyone.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF EDITORS

The decision to accept, reject or conditionally accept a work is the responsibility of the Editorial Committee, based on its judgment of the feasibility, originality and contribution of the work.

The Editorial Committee must treat all authors who submit their works in a fair and equal manner.

The Editors must be free of any conflict of interest related to the authors, the work or their financiers, which tilts their decision towards the acceptance or rejection of a particular manuscript, and if they have an insurmountable impediment, they must express it in a timely manner and withdraw from the evaluation of a particular job.
If a member of the Editorial Committee notices errors or inaccuracies in articles that have already been published, it is their responsibility to inform the other members of the Committee, to proceed with a correction or retraction as the case warrants.

The members of the Editorial Committee must not reveal to anyone the content of the articles submitted for publication consideration. The Committee also undertakes to follow the necessary procedures to guarantee that the identity of the reviewers is preserved during the evaluation process.
