Abstract

In this paper we will analyze the construction of the secondary characters Kleandros and Kallidemos in the novel Drosilla and Charikles composed by Niketas Eugenianos in the twelfth century. Our hypothesis is that characters are aware of literary tradition and that this knowledge informs their speeches and behavior. The selected corpus revolves around the representation of erotic passion and its link with illness and death. To carry out this study we will rely on the postulates of cognitive narratology that will allow us to relate the reception of stories with the shaping of one's own experience.
