Abstract

This article reconstructs a characteristic episode of the first years of stability in the Viceroyalty of Peru. After the rebellions of the encomenderos, the search for new territories fulfilled the dual role of being the best way to get honors, privileges and wealth, as well as (for the colonial authorities) the best way to reward and punish newcomers or neutralize the “revoltosos”. The failure of the entrance to the Rupa - Rupa, one of the last entries on Amazon foothills, not only shows the lack of interest that the colonial government had in search of new territories, but also the way in which the conquerors were related with the indigenous, and especially the visión that Amazonian societies had of the Spaniards.
