Abstract

Taking into account the latest studies by Ana María Lorandi -focused on institutional and political aspects of the colonial order-, we try to show in this essay how, by means of those studies, Lorandi opened up the way to a new interdisciplinary relationship between historical anthropology (just as she conceived this discipline) and the new legal history. In the first place, beginning with the so-called “legal turn” in political history, we analyze the conditions that made that relationship possible, particularly those related to the methodological turns in the field of social sciences (culturalist, linguistic, anthropological turn). Secondly, we show how Lorandi incorporated essential elements of the new legal history into her studies on historical anthropology, also highlighting some interpretative divergences. Finally we make a brief reflection on the possible outcomes of this interdisciplinary relationship to which Lorandi decidedly contributed in the local academic environment.
