Abstract

The objective of the paper is to draw an overview of the situation of the indigenous population of the Tucumán plains and the eastern edge of the mountains, including some medium-altitude valleys -such as Choromoros and Colalao- in the period that spans from the end of the 17th century to beginning of the 18th century, which we will call “post-war” due to the end of the Diaguita-Calchaquí war that jeopardize Spanish rule in the region. The proposed analysis will be carried out based on a series of archival records -Indian censuses- and aims to establish an ethnic-demographic panorama of the encomiendas of the region,  to provide their location and dispersion in said period and also reflect on some hypotheses for future research.
