Abstract

The article studies the process of rise and consolidation of two elite families of the Salta province at the end of the Colonial period. It aims to evaluate the persistence of social values as kinship and social prestige in relation to economic success resulting from mercantile activity. We will analyze the strategies and alliances existing in the process of social interaction destined to preserve the material and symbolic capital and with it the areas of power in the turbulent years between the Borbonic reforms and the crisis of the Colonial order and the followin War of Independence, in the jurisdiction of Salta city.
