Abstract

This paper presents the archaeological evidence of armed confrontations in Quebrada de Humahuaca during the last centuries of the Prehispanic era and discusses some alternative interpretations of their significance. It is argued that, beginning in the firsts centuries of the secon millenium A. D., the people of the Quebrada (as many others of the south-central Andes) were involved in a state of endemic, interregional conflict that reached its moment of maximun intensity towards the 14th century. This phenomenon caused deep changes in the economy and political organization of those populations.
