Focus and Scope

The aim of El oído pensante is to promote the discussion of the theoretical, methodological and epistemological dilemmas faced by the research carried out on the different kinds of musical and sound manifestations. It receives unpublished articles in Spanish, Portuguese and English dealing with ethnomusicology, anthropology and sociology of music, popular music studies, musicology, and cultural studies, among others. Papers should be original and will only be accepted if they produce criticism of theoretical paradigms, methods, knowledge validation forms, ideologies involved in research, representation resources, narrative strategies, ethical and aesthetic research perspectives, the fieldwork experience, social and political research significance, the researcher’s perceptive and conceptual baggage, new technologies and their ways of spreading and sharing knowledge, etc. Since the intention of the Journal is to promote critical thought aimed to dismantle usual concepts and to open new approaches, case studies restricted to the description of musical and sound phenomena will not be accepted. However, it is expected that authors bring some cases into the text in order to support their main ideas. Likewise, priority will be given to proposals that address issues of transregional or global scope and adopt a transdisciplinary approach. Reviews will also be accepted, which must be previously agreed upon with the Associate Editor (Juliana Guerrero).

Peer Review Process

Evaluation system and criteria

El oído pensante uses the blind peer review system. Once the Editorial Board considers that the contribution respects academic standards, editorial rules and the objectives of the journal, it is evaluated by two external peers, who may recommend accepting it without changes, accepting it with changes or rejecting it. In case of discrepancies in the decisions, a third external evaluation will be requested. According to the decision made by the peers, the Editorial Board may accept, request changes to or reject the contribution. It is estimated that the evaluation process takes four months as from the deadline for submissions (31st March and 30th September). El oído pensante requests the evaluating peers to guide their considerations with the following questions:

  • Do you consider the topic dealt with in the article meets the objectives of the Journal?
  • Does the text show enough knowledge about recent publications in the same field?
  • Do you consider that the article is too dependent on the sources on which it is based, to the point that its originality is affected?
  • How do you evaluate the balance between description and interpretation shown by the text?
  • What is your opinion about the way the information is organized?
  • How do you evaluate the text from a stylistic and grammatical point of view?
  • Are the objectives clearly stated? Are they met?

The reviews and interviews are usually ordered by the Editorial Board and are subject only to internal evaluation.
