Research of Timing in Performance: Software as a Tool for the Analysis of Tonal Classical Music

  • Igor Saenz Abarzuza

Abstract

Most of the research work on music performance focuses on performance measurement parameters, even though papers on performance models, music performance planning, and performance practice itself are increasing steadily. The tempo has probably been the aspect of music performance studied the most. The aim of this paper is to revise those studies focusing on agogics from a computational point of view through some of the most important articles, as well as the principal challenges the discipline faces and the difficulties which must be overcome when studying it. The free software Sonic Visualiser is considered particularly important, as it is one of the most useful tools to carry out this kind of research.
