Strategies of appropriation and capital of family mobility in neighborhoods with physical and symbolic limitations for spatial mobility, in the metropolis of Santiago de Chile

Abstract

The case study that supports this article aims to explore the implications of the installation of the South Access Highway to Santiago (AASS) and the Metropolitan Public Transportation System on the strategies and mobility capital deployed by families living in segregated neighborhoods in the southern area of the city of Santiago. In this specific context, forms of exclusion related to the ability to move within and through the city are evident. The urban interventions analyzed exacerbate processes of segregation and social exclusion, making it more difficult to use the city. This case highlights the lack of visibility of the problems faced by the inhabitants of this and other poor neighborhoods in the city, who, in their daily lives, must deploy various appropriation strategies to avoid being (im)mobilized and to carry out their daily movements.
