Abstract

A series of travel accounts on sailing to the coasts of California, during the 16th and 17th Century make note of the differences between wanderers and sailors. From the reduced space of a ship, a satellite that lends itself for observation without contact, the sailor describes the coastal geographies. The ship is a place of refuge. It is protection and resistance. He who wanders, on the other hand is exposed and his representations make evident certain displacements in the subjectivity of the traveller.
