Abstract

The present essay analizes the short duration of the Jesuitic missions developed at the Chaco area during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It emphasizes those developed towards the Toba: a group of nomad peasants, of the Guaycurú linguistic stock. It proposes the evaluation of the briefness of those strongholds from two different perspectives: the appropriateness of not to the model established by the missonaries, against the maintenance and persistence of the Toba identity, through their relationship with the Colonial society.
