Genadio de Marsella in the later tradition of <i>De Viris Illustribis</i>. Impact of the soteriological discussions in the history of its transmission

Abstract

Gennade of Marseille is constantly present in reference and academic works concerning 5th century christian culture. On the contrary, the information about his situation and doctrinal choice in this context is scarce. Formal features of his De viris illustribus could explain that. This text is a kind of| bibliotheca, a book on other books and, prima facie, rather a compilation than an original work. Besides, De vir. ill. is part of a tradition made of homonymous texts, between those of most famous men, Jerome of Stridon and Isidore of Sevilla. Nevertheless, there are some hints pointing to the author and avoiding us to trace his a bio-bibliographic profil.
