Abstract

Juan Martínez Villergas was a Spanish professional journalist and satirical writer. For several reasons he travelled across Latin America, writing and printing satirical journals in every point he settled. This article explores the newspaper he published in Buenos Aires, Anton Perulero. Periódico satirico de política y literature (1875-1876), and describes its contributions to modernize the local press field. One of its singular fea-tures was the way satirical impact rests in language (and not in its caricatures). Since national language is one of the main issues of Anton Perulero, its satirical mood also reveals inner (regional) conflicts around topics like national language and nationality.
