A The (lack of) attention to the motorcycle in the urban mobility system planning
Abstract
In the face of the Brazilian scenario of intra-urban commuting, the mode by motorcycle has been conquering protagonist positions. Its particular versatility and dynamism are also characteristics that dictate its greatest challenge: the traffic accidents, which are extremely costly to life and to public coffers. The motorcycle is a piece that composes an urban mobility system, which must be planned in accordance with the instructions of the Brazilian National Policy on Urban Mobility (Federal Law nº 12.587/2012). This article investigates five mobility plans, in the five regions of Brazil, in municipalities that have high rates of motorization index for this mode of travel. The debate reveals null or superficial treatments for motorcycles, as well do not address thoughts about its causes and consequences. With the exception of statistical data, it is highlighted the absence of research on the subject. Although elected as the main modal choice by part of the population, the motorcycle is commonly neglected by urban mobility planning instruments, causing relevant consequences in the social, territorial, environmental and economic dynamics of the cities.Downloads
