Objects in Dance since the Artistic Avant-Gardes of the Early 20th Century

Abstract

Within the performing arts, there is a line of productions interested in working with objects and dance has made important contributions to it. Objects have been an integral part of the changes that both the arts of movement and the performing arts in general have undergone during the twentieth century, so objects cannot be conceived outside of them. Thus, this paper carries out a diachronic analysis of objects in dance, starting with the artistic avant-gardes of the beginning of last century in order to recognize the moments of change or innovation. The study is based on a deconstruction of the artistic work that seeks to analyze the characteristics of selected objects and the relations of subject-object interaction, considering their interrelation with other constitutive elements of the performance and their impact on the semantic construction of each of the following pieces of the period, which will be taken as reference: Parade (1917) The Green Table (1932), Lamentation (1930) and Triadic Ballet (1922).
