Abstract

On November 30, 1930 Leónidas Barletta, an intellectual tied to the PC (Communist Party), founded the Teatro del Pueblo. This action reflects the development of argentine culture and thought of the moment. Besides that, the movement of Independent Theatre emerged from Teatro del Pueblo. Barletta's theatre occupied different venues until its closure with the death of its director in 1975 and has always been oriented in all respects by his figure. Among the factors that led to the closure of Teatro del Pueblo are the personal leadership of Barletta and the evidence that both aesthetic and ideological remanence to which they had arrived. We will develop an intellectual journey of the Independent Theatre with the ultimate goal of interpreting the symbolic space that the classical left occupied in the theatre field at mid-sixties, as well as the theatrical tradition of some emerging figures in the decade.
