António Granjo's Sad “Great Adventure”. Republican Perceptions on the Great War
Abstract
An ardent defender of republicanism and a militant promoter of the regime change, which took place in October 1910, António Granjo observed the Great War as a confrontation between despotism and progressivism, as well as an attempt to reformulate the political map of Europe, in favour of the great empires. Soon, he advocated Portuguese belligerence, aligned with the powers of the Entente Cordiale and, coherently, joined the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps, as a volunteer. Aware of the unquestionable relevance of the confrontation, which resulted in the formation of a new world, he committed himself to the didactic task of disseminating the experience of the former combatant and the polyhedral reality intrinsic to the “Great Adventure”.Downloads
