2. MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

The reception of manuscripts and the development of the entire evaluation process is carried out electronically through Open Journal Systems (OJS), an open source environment for the management and publication of online academic journals, created by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). In this way, the submission of manuscripts is done through the ARQUEOLOGÍA journal Portal. For this purpose, it is necessary that authors register and log in with a user name and password. Only in exceptional and duly justified cases, the Editorial Team will accept the submission of manuscripts through the official e-mail of the journal (revistaarqueologia@gmail.com).

2.1. Files required for submission

Submission of contributions for consideration in the journal ARQUEOLOGÍA should include the electronic submission of all mandatory files stipulated by these editorial guidelines. These include: 2.1) manuscript text and 2.2) supplementary files. The supplementary files include: a) Tables or Figures; b) Figures and tables legends; c) Suggested and excused reviewers; d) Terms and Conditions Form. The type, format and characteristics of each of these files are described below.

2.1.1. Manuscript text

This is a text file containing the author's writing, which must follow the guidelines established in these rules. This file must be sent in MS Word format, with DOC or DOCX extension. Files with PDF extension will not be accepted. The page and paragraph configurations of the manuscript text file should contemplate the following parameters:

  • Page size: A4 sheet.
  • Page margins: left and right 3 cm, top and bottom 2.5 cm.
  • Page numbering: the numbering of all the pages of the manuscript must be inserted using the automatic command of the word processor. It must be correlative and located at the bottom right margin of the page.
  • Text spacing: 1.5 lines.
  • Paragraph alignment: justified.
  • Spacing between paragraphs: leading 0 points, trailing 12 points.
  • Typography: Times New Roman in size 11.
  • Indents and tabs: the text must be presented without any indentation or tabulation. The only exception to this rule is for textual citations of more than 40 words (see Citations and bibliographical references).

2.1.2. Supplementary files

a) Tables and Figures: All graphic material should be reported in terms of "Tables" or "Figures". Other types of denominations such as: graphs, images, photographs, illustrations or tables will not be accepted. In case the manuscript presents Tables and/or Figures:

  • They should be named consecutively using Arabic numerals (e.g., Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 1).
  • They should be correctly cited in the text of the manuscript.
  • They must be inserted in the text file of the manuscript, together with their corresponding legends or captions. Manuscripts with phrases such as "insert figure or table here" will not be accepted.
  • They should also be sent separately as a complementary file, following the format indicated below.

Due to limitations of the editorial management system, each file cannot exceed 2 MB. In case this restriction significantly affects the quality of the graphic material, authors should contact the Editorial Team of the journal through the official e-mail address (revistaarqueología@gmail.com). All text contained in Tables and Figures should be in the language in which the contribution is submitted. The typography should be of sufficient size so that the text is legible. In order to fit the design of the journal, the box size should not exceed 16 cm in width and 21 cm in height.

The moderate use of composite Tables and Figures (made up of several partial images or references) is accepted. However, their acceptance will be subject to the decision of the Editorial Team and the submission of each individual element separately may be requested. To reference this type of material, capital letters should be used and cited in the text as: Figure 1A, Figure 1B, Table 2A, Table 2B, etc.

  • Tables: Only DOC or DOCX (MS Word) and XLS or XLSX (MS Excel) extensions will be accepted for Table files. Tables whose extension occupies the entire size of the box must be in vertical format. Complex Tables in landscape format or that exceed the box size will not be accepted. In the latter case, Tables should be divided into several sub-tables, each with its own heading.
  • Figures: ARQUEOLOGIA admits the publication of Figures in color. In the case of figures that exceed 16 cm in width, they will be reduced to the maximum width established. Figures can be sent in raster or bitmap format, as well as in vector format. Raster files must have JPG extension and resolution no less than 300 dpi real. Vector files must have XLS or XSLX (MS Excel), AI (Adobe Illustrator) or CDR (Corel Draw) extension. In the case of Figures that represent graphics or that have been initially created in vector systems, please send the files in the original format, avoiding raster formats for these cases. Figures representing maps and plans should always include a graphic scale and indication of north, as well as a miniature map of the region, located in the upper left corner.

b) Figures and tables legends: The correlative list of headings of Tables and Figures should be sent in a separate text file (DOC or DOCX extension). The length of each of the legends should not exceed 500 characters including spaces. Legends inserted directly in the Tables and Figures will not be accepted.

c) Suggested and excused reviewers: This document should only be submitted for refereed manuscripts (Articles and Reports) (see Sections Policy). The file should be attached in MS Word format (DOC or DOCX extension) and should include the suggestion of at least four (4) potential reviewers who are recognized specialists in the specific topic or in the disciplinary field of the manuscript, which will be put to the consideration of the Editorial Team. In addition, if there are colleagues who should be "excused" or "recused" from acting as reviewers, they should be mentioned in this document, together with the due justification.

d) Terms and Conditions Form: This document must be signed in handwriting or with a certified digital signature by each and every one of the authors of the manuscript. It should be sent in PDF format along with the other suplementary files to the manuscript submission (Download).

2.2. Submission Preparation Checklist

At the time of submission, authors should check that their submission meets all of the parameters listed below. Failure to comply with any of them may be grounds for formal rejection by the Editorial Team (see Editorial Process).

1) The manuscript should be sent in MS Word format, with DOC or DOCX extensions.

2) The manuscript complies with the format and style guidelines stipulated in the Author Guidelines.

3) The manuscript is original, has not been previously published and is not currently under consideration by any other journal.

4) All data in the manuscript are valid and accurate.

5) All attributions of citations and bibliographic references are correct and accurate.

6) Whenever possible, electronic addresses should be provided for bibliographic references available in digital format, with special emphasis on the use of persistent identifiers (e.g. DOI, Handle).

7) All the graphic material used has the due authorization of reproduction and publication.

8) For refereed manuscripts, the document "Suggested and excused reviewers" is also attached as part of the supplementary files.

9) The “Terms and Conditions Form” (Download) has been signed by all authors and is attached as part of the supplementary files

2.3. Manuscript sections and contents

All refereed manuscripts (Articles and Reports) must present the following sections and contents, without exception:

2.3.1. Titles: The title of the manuscript should be submitted in Spanish and English. In both cases, manuscript titles should not exceed 250 characters (including spaces) and should be written in lower case, bold, without underlining and with centered alignment. The only exception in the number of characters applies to Undergraduate Theses Summaries and PhD Dissertations Summaries whose title must respect the original. In the case of Articles and Reports dealing with local or regional issues, or analyzing materials with specific provenance, the title of the manuscripts should include some geographical reference (e.g. country, province, etc.).

2.3.2. Authorship: All information concerning the identification of the authors of the manuscript should be listed in a separate line, aligned on the right margin of the page, immediately after the title of the paper. The data of each author should detail the following information:

2.3.2.1. Author: Name and surname.

2.3.2.2. ORCID: The author's ORCID identification number in URL format must be indicated on the next line. This code is a unique and persistent digital identifier for scientific and academic authors (https://orcid.org/).

2.3.2.3. Institutional affiliation and e-mail: As stipulated in Article 4.5 of Resolution 753/16, which regulates Law No. 26,899 on Open Access Institutional Digital Repositories, authors must declare their institutional affiliation in a standardized manner, involving only those institutions that have framed or financed the work performed. The institutional affiliation or membership of each author should be stated in the line following the mention of ORCID. The presentation of this information as a footnote will not be accepted. For co-authored manuscripts this procedure should be repeated in the notation of the institutional affiliation of each author. The Editorial Team reserves the right to correct and homologate the notation of the affiliation reported by the authors. It is requested to take into account the concordance of the institutional data provided with the metadata uploaded in their identification record through the ARQUEOLOGÍA journal Portal. A maximum of two (2) academic affiliations per author will be accepted. In the event that the institutions present official acronyms, these should be included in parentheses after their breakdown. In view of the above, the affiliation of each author should detail the following information, without exception: a) Organization or institution with which the author is affiliated (avoid the use of acronyms); b) Institutional mailing address (including street, number, postal code, city, province and country); and c) Current e-mail address for contacting the author.

As an example, use the following format as a reference:

2.3.3. English and Spanish Abstract: Refereed manuscripts (Articles and Reports) should present a Abstract in two languages, Spanish and English. They should be written in a single paragraph, may not include bibliographical references and should have a minimum length of 150 and a maximum of 250 words.

2.3.4. English and Spanish Keywords: Refereed manuscripts (Articles and Notes) should present between three (3) and five (5) keywords in two languages, Spanish and English. These identifiers should be separated by commas and should not repeat words that are present in the title of the manuscript. Given the thematic specificity of the journal, the term "archaeology" will not be accepted as a keyword.

2.3.5. Section headings: The internal headings that separate sections and paragraphs within the text may be of three (3) types: primary, secondary and tertiary. They must have the following format:

2.3.5.1. Primary headings: Must be aligned to the left, in lower case, bold and without underlining, separated from the previous paragraph by one (1) line and not spaced with respect to the following paragraph.

2.3.5.2. Secondary headings: Must be aligned to the left, in lower case, bold, italic and without underlining, separated from the previous paragraph by one (1) line and without spacing with respect to the following paragraph.

2.3.5.3. Tertiary headings: Must be aligned to the left, in lower case, in italics and without underlining, separated from the previous paragraph by one (1) line and not spaced with respect to the following paragraph.

2.3.6. Text: The structure of the discourse of refereed manuscripts (Articles and Reports) should follow the IMRyD standardized model (introduction, methods, results and discussion or conclusions). Eventually, the Editorial Team of the journal may accept manuscripts that do not have any of the sections considered, or that present alternative structures, as long as the text is clear and presents a logical structural order. In addition, the sections Acknowledgements and References should be included at the end of all Articles and Reports.

2.3.7. Footnotes: A maximum of twelve (12) footnotes will be accepted in refereed manuscripts (Articles and Notes). The length of each footnote should not exceed 500 characters, including spaces. All footnotes should be numbered consecutively and placed at the bottom of the page. Footnotes should be inserted using the automatic command of the word processor. Manuscripts with footnotes at the end of the text will not be accepted.

2.3.8. Acknowledgements: As stipulated in Article 4.5 of Resolution 753/16, which regulates Law No. 26,899 on Open Access Institutional Digital Repositories, all sources of funding that were used for the development of the research should be mentioned in this section. For this purpose, the name of the organizations that financed the research project and the minimum data (project code) that allow its identification must be indicated. Likewise, this section should also include the corresponding acknowledgements to all the persons and institutions that collaborated with the research. The Editorial Team will not accept manuscripts without this section. Finally, once the manuscript has passed the external evaluation (see Editorial Process), thanks to the anonymous reviewers who contributed to improve the manuscript should also be included.

2.3.9. References: this section should be located at the end of the manuscript and should contain only a detailed list of all the bibliographic citations mentioned in the text. This list should be arranged alphabetically, according to the surname of the first author, and then chronologically, according to the date of each of the citations mentioned (see 4. Citations and bibliographical references).
